The start of the 1950s:
The beginning of the 1950s was known as the "Beginning of the American Dream" and/or the "Growth Era." World War II had just ended and the world had largely recovered from World War II and the Cold War.
Entertainment in the 1950s:In the 1950s drive-in theaters became very popular. Drive-in theaters
were labeled as "passion pits" due to the privacy the patrons gave them. The Del-Norte Drive-In Theatre was open in El Paso in 1947 with a car capacity of 500 cars. It closed in 1973 and has since been demolished. |
Automobiles in the 1950s:In the 1950s the automobiles industry grew massively due to World War II. The decade began with almost twenty-five million automobiles registered on the road it nearly tripled by the end of the 1950s. |
Men's clothing in the 1950s:The 1950's saw men wearing cardigan sweaters, tropical shirts, and polo shirts. They all reflected the affluence after the war and demonstrated that
men had more leisure time. The 1950s brought about a new air of fashion, as men wore more than just "civilian clothing," a term that described the plain suit, raincoat and hat ensemble prevalent after World War II. The decade saw an increase in styles, from the Teddy Boy fad to the urban-inspired greaser look. Between bright-colored suits, denim jeans, leather jackets and berets, men of the 1950s had plenty of styles to choose from. |
Women's clothing in the 1950s:The 1950s had two primary fashion styles: the pencil skirt and the full skirt.
Although very different looks, both of these styles accentuated a tiny waist. Fashions of the early 1950s were inherently feminine, but as the decade progressed, there was a major change. |
